During restoration of Welch Hall, constructed in 1929, a vertical crack in several limestone blocks was observed. A probe revealed a corroding steel column encased in brick-and-mortar masonry not indicated in the drawings. The architect and structural engineer asked SUPERSTRUCTURES to determine non-destructively whether the column continued up past the crack regions. Ground penetrating radar revealed two columns, a lower corroding column flush with the back of alternating limestone blocks and an upper column fully encased in the masonry.
