Leak investigations proceed from lower to upper surfaces and joints until the source of water penetration is found. An interesting aspect of this investigation of a leak into an Upper East Side apartment from a patio above was that all patio elements had observable damage and were likely candidates. The patio roof was flooded, an HVAC penetration and door joint tested with a hose nozzle, then the parapet wall and flashing were tested with a spray bar, but it was the coping joint that proved to be the source of the leak.
